George Washington is not a happy camper

George Washington sent a letter to James Madison in 1789 and included the following in his correspondence: “no generation has a right to contract debts greater than can be paid off during the course of its own existence”.

Our elected representatives have Mr. Washington spinning in his grave. The motto of this “not the greatest generation” in congress remains “we are the most important generation in history and as such our objective is to make sure we have gorged ourselves to a point of fiscal obesity and contracted debt that is designed not to be paid off for at least a grandchild generation”.

67% of congress is between the ages of 50 and 69. Might a measurable number of them have grandchildren? Maybe if they placed a photo of their grandchildren on each bill prior to signing it, they might actually acknowledge the moral obligation addressed by George Washington 220 years ago. Clearly the photos of grandchildren prominently displayed on office desks are conveniently flipped over each and every time the lobbyist crowd shows up.

It is time to look past your own nose and truly be a leader for future generations. Your Pinocchio days must come to an end.
