FDIC closes 8 banks Friday and 50 total banks in 2010

The FDIC was busy Friday shuttering 8 banks in a single day. This was a 2010 single day record for the FDIC as their prior "break a sweat" shutter day record was March 23rd when they closed 7 banks. Collectively, these 8 banks will cost the FDIC approximately $984.7 million.

FL remains atop the leader board with 9 banks closed in 2010 while GA is in 2nd place with 7 shuttered banks and WA. Still fighting for Bronze are CA and MN each with 4 shuttered banks in 2010.

Sheila Bair predicted that bank closings will peak in 2010 and that the total number of shuttered banks will be slightly greater than 2010. Excluding New Year's Day and Good Friday, the FDIC has managed to close 50 banks over a 14 Friday period or roughly 3 1/2 banks per week.
