The Senate on Thursday rejected a package of tax cuts, state aid and emergency jobless benefits, leaving more than 1.2 million unemployed workers without support checks and millions more in danger of losing their benefits within the next few months.

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) joined a united Republican caucus in voting to block the measure, citing concern that it would expand already bloated federal budget deficits. Given their failure to win Republican support, Senate Democratic leaders said they would not try again to take up the matter until after the July 4 recess. By then, more than 2 million people will have seen their unemployment benefits cut off, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

"People are in the mood of letting the dust settle before finding the next step," said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.)

Grandpa: Mr. Conrad, people are in the mood for you career politicians to finally place the needs of the citizens on the front burner and the lobbyists representing your contributions on the back burner. If you had any forethought, you might actually take action on what is in the best interest of grandchildren however that would require you to actually care about somone other than your day-to-day needs.

Remeber your campaign pledge...would not run for re-election if the Federal budget deficit had not fallen by the end of his term. You opeted not to run for re-election and made it appear that you actually had principals....then because of a death, you took the opportunity to run during a special election....so much for principals. You entered the "system" in 1987, it is now 2010. And you are different from other members of Congress because _______________ (it is a short blank Kent as grandpa felt your likely response of "cause" would fit.

On a scale of 1 to 10, your commitment to principals is...
I'll take that to mean zero...
